Frequently Asked Questions

What if I want hurricane protection but am not sure what I need or what type?

Southern Customs will gladly meet with you and discuss all of your options including impact windows, impact doors, and hurricane shutters and together determine which product is the best suited for your home and the look you desire.

What are the benefits of installing impact windows or doors?

There are many benefits of installing impact windows.  One benefit is the hurricane protection that is always in place.  There is no need to call someone to install the shutters, or taking the time to put shutters up or down in time for the storm.  Other benefits include home security, noise reduction, and energy efficiency.

What is the turn-around time for ordering new windows or doors and having them installed?

The length of time from ordering the product to the installation usually varies between 5-8 weeks depending on the product type and manufacturer.

What measures are taken to provide protection to my home during the installation process?

Southern Customs takes the time to protect the floors near the work area, and place protection over any furnishings near the work area.  Dust is blown out during the time of drilling to avoid any unnecessary cleaning.  We are very cautious of any finishes around the window and really take the time to apply common sense and care for your home.

Are the previous doors and windows taken or is my responsibility to dispose of them?

Southern Customs is responsible of disposing any old windows or doors, and any debris resulting from the job performed.

Do I need to be home during the project taking place?

It is not necessary for the homeowner to be home during the work taking place as long as access has been arranged to get to the areas needed.

Who handles the permitting process?

Southern Customs handles the entire permitting process from beginning to end.  The homeowner may need to sign a Notice of Commencement (if required).

What kinds of hurricane shutters are available?

Depending on what you are looking for there are Panels, Accordians, Roll Downs, and Hurricane Screen.  Once these options are discussed with the owner, a selection is usually made based on price and what is convenient for the homeowner.

What colors can I choose from for hurricane shutters?

That varies by the type of shutter selected by the owner. Steel and aluminum storm panels have a natural and unpainted finish. Accordions and Roll-Downs are available in 4 different powder coat paint colors; White, Ivory, Beige, and Bronze. Bahama and Hinged Colonials can be painted just about any color you desire all high quality powder coat finishes.

What are the insurance benefits to having shutters or impact windows/doors?

Most insurance companies offer a discount when you have protected all of the glazed openings on your house. Sometimes insurance companies won’t write a policy on your house if you are in the wind borne debris zone and don’t have protection. You should contact your insurance company to determine their requirements and policies, in some cases they may require a inspection of your property.

Impact windows are generally preferred by insurance carriers due to the fact that the insurance companies can’t guarantee that the hurricane shutters are down or in place during the impact of a storm.
